June 4, 2009 Update: The GPW is now importing sexagesimal coordinates correctly. Skyplot still does not plot science targets for observations with sexagesimal coordinates. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(June 3, 2009) The GALEX Planning Wizard appears to
be having problems with coordinates in sexigesimal format. Coordinates
in decimal format appear to be handled correctly by the Wizard. Users are advised to use decimal coordinates if possible until this problem is fixed, or to run planning tools manually and paste results into the ARK form. Coordinates can be converted from sexagesimal to decimal using the coordinate converter tool (link to) https://heasarc.gsfc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/Tools/convcoord/convcoord.pl ).
The symptoms so far include:
If you would like to convert an existing proposal from sexagesimal to decimal coordinates, you can 'Submit' and then 'Modify' it in ARK. It will reload with coordinates in decimal format. (This will require your proposal to verify, before submitting). If you have uploaded an ARK Save file into the Wizard, check your
coordinates for truncation. This appears to happen only when loading a Save file into the Wizard. If you correct the coordinates inside the
Wizard, and then write a Save file, the coordinates do not appear to be
truncated (but they will be re-truncated if you upload into the Wizard
again). There are no truncation issues with ARK/RPS. Omission of science targets and labels from Sky Plot Tool result, if input coordinates are in sexagesimal. This problem occurs whether the Sky Plot is run from within the Wizard or stand-alone. The plot tool works correctly when coordinates are entered in decimal format. BACK TO Cycle 6 Information Page
